Tubular Breast Correction

Tubular breast, also referred to as tuberous breast, constricted breast, or oval breast is a congenital variation of the normal. It is where the breast is not as round, the lower pole skin is tight and short, the breast fold is higher up under the breast, the areola is large and puffy, and breast tissue may be minimal. It is an operation where correction depends on an unusual degree of extra internal incisions, the correct choice of implants, and careful counseling and instructions. Almost always this surgery can be performed in one stage, with an incision no bigger than that required for implants, and no need for tubes, drains, expanders or needles. Dr Romano has special expertise in this surgery and his outstanding surgical results draw patients from all over the world for correction of the tubular breast anatomy.

THE TYPICAL PATIENT

  • A patient with a small and tight breast that looks abnormal.
  • Often associated with large areola that are puffy and protrude.
  • Features of a breast that is not round but narrower from top to bottom and with tight skin especially below the nipple.

THE PROCEDURE

  • Anesthesia is usually a very light general and the procedure takes about two to three hours.
  • The incision is usually confined to around the nipple entirely, and can be very inconspicuous.
  • The procedure involves making internal incisions to release the tight breast tissues, making a larger space for an implant, rounding out the lower breast (inframmary) crease, and correcting enlarged and protruding areola.
  • Drains are rare.
  • Dressings and a light compression garment are used for several days.
  • This can be combined with other plastic surgical procedures.

THE RECOVERY

  • You can go home after several hours or can stay overnight.
  • You can shower on the second day after surgery.
  • There is only minimal pain that is mostly gone by the second or third day and easily controlled by medications.
  • Swelling is mild to moderate and peaks at two to three days then disappears rapidly over the next three weeks.
  • Minimal or no bruising is the usual.
  • Some grogginess is present which persists for about a week.
  • You can resume many activities within the first week, and most by at least three weeks.
  • The stitches are removed at seven days.
  • Expect to be off of work for only three to seven days.

THE RESULT

  • There is a slow development of your eventual round breast look. This is because the lower breast has to expand and stretch, both from the internal relaxation incisions, and the pressure of the implant.
  • Beautiful, balanced and proportioned contour.
  • Improvement of the areola size and shape.
  • More confident and comfortable in clothing.
  • Lasts the rest of your life and always looks better than if you didn't do it.
  • Natural and presentable appearance in the first several weeks that just gets better over the next three to six months.
