Eyelid Surgery

Your eyes are the window to your soul. Patients really focus on their eye features. I revere these two facts very much. For this reason, firstly, I really understand why patients come to me concerned and disturbed like they are about their eyes, and I do see what you see. Secondly, I really am very careful, conservative, and exacting with everything I talk about and do in the field of eyelid plastic surgery. I can help you through one of more than one option that exists.

The usual comments I hear from patients are things such as that they look old, sad, or tired. Other complaints are of excess skin, “hooding”, bags, puffiness, wrinkles, drooping eyebrows, heaviness, difficulty in looking up, or the inability to apply makeup. Still others come to me concerned about the shape of the eye and eyelid. The anatomy of the eyelids is understandably complex. There are an extraordinary number of small anatomic features all packed into a little space that all must function perfectly, and where as little as 1 millimeter of abnormality can become more than obvious. The structures to deal with of the upper and lower eyelids are the very delicate tendons for support, very thin skin, muscle, the fat pockets below the muscle, your eyeball, and the bony eye socket. All these are very intimately associated with each other, so these many different anatomic features here must be carefully analyzed and addressed prior to your surgery. I will coordinate the features of your anatomy with your expectations, formulate a plan with you, and guide you through this. There are very specific techniques for specific eyelid issues and I will explain and illustrate all of these to you. Surgery involves a relatively short procedure under a light general anesthetic, performed where I do surgery, which is in a hospital setting. The surgery is safe and predictable. All the stitches are small and removed in 4-7 days with return to work in as little as 1-2 days, and to some physical exercise within the first week. Plastic surgery of and around the eyelid may involve any of the following:

  • Blepharoplasty. This is the medical term for removing one or more of excess skin, excess fat, or excess muscle. The incision can be below the eyelashes or inside the eyelid.
  • Fat Grafting or Fat Repositioning. This is done if you have a deep “tear trough” or groove in the lower eyelid. I can add fat here or move some of your natural fat around.
  • Injectables. Restyane or Perlane can occasionally be used to beautifully fill in the tear trough.
  • Eyelid Peels. These are done at the same time to remove wrinkles
  • Canthoplasty. This is to move the tendon at the outer corner. See the separate section on this.

This is an extremely technical procedure and takes very special expertise to first accurately identify what is the nature of the eyelid features, then what must be done carefully and artistically to correct it. I have this expertise in eyelid surgery and have performed hundreds of these operations with very natural results that do not make you look different or like a different person, but rather, youthful and bright and refreshed. I spend a great deal of time discussing your anatomy, listening to your expectations, and interpreting for you what your anatomy and tissues will allow me to do in a safe and predictable way. In addition, I consider your body as a whole and I build a system into every facial surgery that, initially, allows you to recover much quicker and, secondly, it serves to preserve your surgical results. This system includes a special diet, special attention to blood clotting, vitamins, supplements, skin products, physical training and knowing what to avoid. Together, all of this allows me to create results that are consistently very beautiful, quick to heal, exceptionally natural, and with minimal incisions, especially in the face; an area of such major importance. I am delighted to surgically provide you with such profound yet natural eyelid changes, and ones that have consistently so pleased my patients and changed their lives.
