Facial Bone Reduction Surgery

There is a growing awareness of certain anatomic features that make the face look wider and, thus, there is a growing interest in how to address this problem. Patients notice wideness to the cheeks or angles of the jaw. This is often an ethnic Asian feature but can occur in anyone as a feature you are born with. It may be subtle to the point where patients really are ashamed to consult me about it, but, I can clearly see their concern and desire for improvement. I am very pleased to help you with this.

The anatomy of the cheek and jaw area under consideration consists basically of enlarged bone, and variable degrees of excess fat and muscle that overlies the bone. Therefore, attention must be directed to the bone and sometimes to the overlying muscle and fat to address this problem. There are a number of very creative options available for correction. These bony areas are intimately related to other facial anatomic features that must be considered prior to your surgery. I will coordinate the features of your anatomy with your expectations, formulate a plan with you, and guide you through this. There are several techniques I offer in my practice to reduce and shape the cheek and jaw area:

  • Bone reduction. This is the most fundamental treatment and this can be relatively non-invasive depending on the degree and the area.
  • Cheek fat reduction. This is done by liposuction may be successful if there is an accumulation of fat in this area.
  • Botox. This can be administered into the jawline if there is an excess of muscle. This is seen when you “clench” your jaw, and if the muscle protrudes, this can be reduced by Botox.

In the case of surgery for bony reduction, this involves a relatively short procedure under a light general anesthetic, performed where I do surgery, which is in a hospital setting. The surgery is safe and predictable. There is a small incision inside the mouth, the affected bony area is reduced, and the incision is closed. There is some mild to moderate swelling, return to work in as little as 2 days, and to some physical exercise within the first week.

I have great expertise in bony reduction surgery and have performed many of these procedures. I spend a great deal of time discussing your anatomy, listening to your expectations, and interpreting for you what your anatomy and tissues will allow me to do in a safe and predictable way. In addition, I consider your body as a whole and I build a system into every facial surgery that, initially, allows you to recover much quicker and, secondly, it serves to preserve your surgical results. This system includes a special diet, special attention to blood clotting, vitamins, supplements, skin products, physical training and knowing what to avoid. Together, all of this allows me to create results that are consistently very beautiful, quick to heal, exceptionally natural, and with minimal incisions, especially in the face; an area of such major importance. I am delighted to surgically provide you with such profound yet natural facial image changes, and ones that have consistently so pleased my patients and changed their lives.
