Breast Reduction Revision
Revision of breast reduction surgery is a very real and predictable
operation. Results of previous breast reduction surgery such as too large, too
small, uneven sizes, uneven nipple and areola sizes, unsightly wide scars, or
recurrence of sagging may all be improved with a revision surgery. Using the
previous incisions, surgery to again remove excess tissue and reshape the breast
can be performed with a great degree of predictability, safety, and patient
satisfaction.
THE PREOPERATIVE FEATURES
- A history of having already undergone a breast reduction with
unsatisfactory cosmetic or functional results in terms of comfort, symmetry,
size, shape or scars, or all of these.
- Persisting enlarged, heavy, sagging breasts often associated with breast
pain, shoulder pain, back pain, nipple numbness, and shoulder grooves from
heavy bra straps.
- Persisting large, wide, dark, or unsightly scars you wish to have made
better.
- Nipples are at or below the breast crease.
- Most of the breast volume is in the sagging lower portion of the breast.
- Large or uneven or not round nipples and areola.
- Desire for a more youthful appearance to the breasts.
- Desire for more comfortable, less painful breasts and better fit into
clothing.
THE PROCEDURE
- Oftentimes a revision surgery for size or shape can be done with
liposuction alone. See the section on Scarless breast reduction.
- If incisions are needed to reduce and re-shape the breast you can use
the previous incisions and no new cuts will need to be made. The incisions
and scars will look better as a result also.
- Revision of scars can be done by removing the old scars and re-stitching
the incisions. This is a very predictable procedure and virtually always
improves the result.
- General anesthesia can be used and it takes about two to four hours.
- A careful exam of the breast tissue is undertaken to make sure no
abnormalities are present.
- Excess skin and breast gland is removed and tucked and lifted to a
higher position on the chest wall and all hidden with your original
incisions.
- The nipples and areola are elevated to a higher position and sometimes
reduced in diameter.
- The only dressing is a surgical bra.
- Drains are used for the first two days, and these are removed painlessly
in the office.
- This can be combined with other surgeries.
THE RECOVERY
- You can go home after several hours or stay overnight.
- You can shower on the second day after surgery.
- Mild pain for the first two days that is mostly gone by the third day
and easily controlled by medications.
- You will feel very groggy for the first two days and weak for about ten
days.
- Swelling is mild to moderate for the first week after which it rapidly
disappears.
- Usually only very mild or no bruising.
- Breasts are square shaped for the first three weeks then settle into a
very normal rounded position.
- Resume many activities within the first week, and most by at least three
weeks.
- No stitches to remove. They are all dissolvable.
- Off of work for five to seven days.
THE RESULT
- Elevated, full, and beautiful size and shape to the breasts.
- Very natural result that just gets better in time. Able to breastfeed
later, under most circumstances.
- Softness and natural bounce that persists. Normal sensation to the
nipples and skin.
- Much better proportion and fit into clothing.
- Ability to exercise and engage in strenuous activities much more
comfortably.
- Natural and presentable appearance right away that just gets better over
the next three to six months.
