Breast Augmentation
Breast enlargement surgery is one of the most popular procedures performed in
cosmetic surgery at this time. There are numerous different techniques, types of
implants, and incisions to use to the point where breast enlargement surgery is
ever more artistic, more natural, and safer than ever before. Much can be done
with this surgery to not only increase the size of your breasts, but to provide
a very beautiful and natural shape. A wide array of implants are available from
saline to silicone, from fuzzy to smooth, from round to anatomic. Women can
choose from different incisions, different types of implants, different
locations for placement such as submammary, subpectoral, dual plane or total
submuscular. Gel fill materials have evolved to be very safe, natural feeling,
and causing less contracture. The preparation of patients with diet,
supplements, and creams combined with a very skillful and safe surgery has
allowed for a virtually pain free recovery.
THE BREAST IMPLANTS
- Saline or silicone implants may be used. Your anatomy, concerns and
priorities will help us determine which implants are best suited for you.
- The latest in technologies are utilized including all shapes (anatomic,
teardrop, or round) and textures (smooth or fuzzy). These allow the doctor
to customize your surgery.
- The many new types of implant fillers such as soybean are still
experimental and are not yet approved by the FDA.
THE PREOPERATIVE FEATURES
- Breasts that are small, uneven or asymmetric.
- Breasts that are slightly sagging or deflated.
- Breasts that are out of proportion to the rest of the body.
- Desire for a better fit in clothing or a more sensual body image.
THE PROCEDURE
- Local or general anesthesia can be used and it takes about two hours.
- Incisions can be placed either in the armpit, around the nipple or
areola, or in the lower breast crease.
- The nipples and areola usually enlarge in proportion to the increased
breast size.
- The space is made exactly in the right place and position to correspond
to the exact type of implant.
- A careful exam of the breast tissue is undertaken to make sure no
abnormalities are present.
- Temporary breast implant sizers are inserted in the space and inflated
to the correct volume and adjustments are made, then the appropriate
permanent implant is inserted.
- The only dressing is a surgical bra.
- No drains.
- This can be combined with other surgeries.
THE RECOVERY
- You can go home after several hours.
- You can shower on the second day after surgery.
- Moderate pain for the first two days that is mostly gone by the third
day and easily controlled by medications.
- You will feel very groggy for the first two days and weak for about ten
days.
- Swelling is moderate for the first week after which it rapidly
disappears.
- Breasts are high on the chest for the first three weeks then settle into
a very normal position and contour.
- Usually no bruising.
- Resume many activities within the first week, and most by at least three
weeks.
- No stitches to remove. They are all dissolvable.
- Off of work for five to seven days, often less.
THE RESULT
- Enlarged, full, balanced breasts.
- Very natural result that just gets better in time.
- Softness and natural bounce that persists.
